Louis Archdeacon, who trains near Banteer in North Co. Cork, saddled his first double at accumulative odds of 113/1 when Captain Ocana rallied gamely under Declan Queally to take the 2m3f beginners chase.
This 18/1 success followed hot on the heels of the victory of Mountain Lough (5/1) in the previous 2m2f handicap hurdle.
The eight-year-old gelding, whose only previous win was in a Bartlemy point-to-point over three years ago, looked a spent force when starting to drop away after two out.
But Queally never gave up and his mount came with a renewed effort to lead again on the short run-in to deny Shake The Bucket (10/1) by a length and a quarter.
The 5/2 favourite Playtime Ben kept on a further three quarters of a length away in third.
Archdeacon said, “They are the only two I have in for the summer, and they both love the good ground. Declan was fairly bullish about this fella, and the good ground is the key to him. He could go to Killarney, and then on to Galway.”
