Buenaventura (5/1) appreciated a step up in trip when landing the ten furlong handicap under Hugh Horgan.
The daughter of Caravaggio, out of a Sadler’s Wells mare, was settled towards the rear and still had plenty to do two furlongs out. She picked up well for pressure to lead inside the final furlong and, despite edging right, stayed on well to defeat Cryptos Dream by three quarters of a length. The winner’s stablemate Obliviate sent off the 6/5 favourite, finished a further half a length back in third.
The winner was getting off the mark on her polytrack debut and after a five month layoff.
Brendan Powell, assistant to winning trainer Joseph O'Brien, said: “She had a couple of nice runs last year and stepped up in trip today. She’s strengthened up and it’s nice that she has got her head in front.
“She was off the bridle a long way out but she kept galloping and hit the line strong. She’ll stay further in time.”
