Astrology swoops from the stars
There was a shock in the one mile maiden at Leopardstown as Aidan O’Brien’s second string Astrology floored Mannheim the hot favourite at 4/6 for the stable.
The 10/1 chance was sixth two furlongs out and sprouted wings in the final furlong to win drawing away by two lengths on his debut. 4/1 shot Canaille for Jessica Harrington was guided home second by Shane Foley.
Mannheim disappointed back in third. He was seemingly going best when the nine runners turned into the home straight but found little when asked for an effort by Joseph O’Brien, who was three pounds overweight.
The winner was ridden by Ballydoyle work rider David McCabe and provided him with his first success since winning at Sligo four years ago.
McCabe said of Astrology: “He’s a very nice colt.”
Although unfancied in the betting ring the two-year-old son of Galileo does hold a host of Group race entries for the back-end of this season and an English Derby entry for next year.
