Against The Breeze popped up at 16/1 for Niall and Tom Madden in the apprentice handicap over a mile in Dundalk.
The grey filly raced in rear of mid-division in this 13-runner heat before making headway to close on the leaders approaching the final furlong.
She finished well to wear down Twistsandturns in the closing stages and win by a length and a quarter.
Twistsandturns (7/1) was a neck in front of third-placed Easy Boy (16/1).
Niall Madden said: “That was great. I’m delighted she’s won for me.
“She had been running well. She ran well at the Curragh when second and I thought that day she had a chance of winning a race.
“She might go back jumping now.”
Rossa Ryan, the national pony racing champion of 2016, had his first racecourse ride on board Specific Gravity who came in sixth.
Ryan is 16 and from Currafin, Co Galway.
