The Charles Byrnes trained Wonder Laish justified strong 1/2 favouritism when landing the M.S.D. Animal Health Maiden Hurdle at Listowel today, but not before giving his supporters a fright at the final flight. Wed 13th Sep
That’s Philip’s first winner over hurdles and it’s great that the owner gave him the opportunity. He turns conditional on Monday. He’s a fair horse on the Flat and this race suited him. We’ll have a look at the programme and he has options on the Flat and over hurdles.
Cathal Byrnes
It is great to get him back as we fancied him in Galway but he left his hind legs in the first and got blocked jumping the second. He (Robbie Power) did the right thing then by easing up,. Philip said he was very comfortable turning in and on paper he was by far the best horse in the race and was rated 92. He will probably run in the Listowel Hurdle next and wouldn't want the ground any worse than that.

It was a big plus getting Davy (Russell). I asked Gordon (Elliott) earlier in the week and he said leave it with me so I have to thank him,.

He jumped better than I thought he would and he won well. It was a great run last week. What the opposition was like, I don't know, but to look at the betting market there wasn't a whole lot fancied. He couldn't do any more than he did. He'll just tip away in handicaps now and we'll see how far he can go. He jumped better than we thought he would. Davy was a bit concerned about his jumping and he jumped better than we expected. He has his Flat mark going forward. A race like the Chester Cup would maybe be possible if he got softish ground. He doesn't want it any better than what's out there.
C Byrnes
Niall (McCullagh) said after the last day to bring him back to a mile-and-a-half and it's unfortunate for Niall as he was offered the ride but stuck with Rashaan as he had won on him in the past. We got a good replacement though!. They went hard and he settled today. He's gassy and he doesn't like to be disappointed and just ran too free the last day and a mile-and-a-half was perfect. He's in at Naas but he'd have to carry a penalty so I'd say we'll go back jumping - he won a bad maiden hurdle in Listowel and I'd say he'll go back jumping now. and he'll go for a winners of one to start off with and we'll see how far he can go.
C Byrnes
he looked the class horse of the race but he still had to go and do it. He settled well and jumped well enough apart from the mistake at the last and won handy enough I thought. Davy (Russell) was very patient and left the other horses do the donkey work and it’s great to get the win for the owner (Martin White). We had a winner yesterday with Alto Esqua and he has a good few horses with me but hadn’t much success for the last seven or eight months. He’ll tip away in a novice but you wouldn’t be jumping up and down after today! If we got heavy ground he might run in the November Handicap.
C Byrnes
