I took a chance on the trip, because we really should have been running in the earlier Mayo National. I just wanted to run against more exposed horses. He’s not slow but just about got away with that distance (2m 3f 136yds) as the ground is quicker than I thought it would be, with not much rain. He jumped great and Donagh gets on well with him. He hasn’t got much mileage for a veteran, I haven’t over-raced him, and thought this was the race for him.

He needs good ground as he has breathing issues,. I tweaked a few things with his wind, he had nice ground today and he'll now head back to Ayr for the Scottish National. He was third in 2023 and was in the race last year but it was soft, so didn't run. When you look at horses running on TV they run well, they run badly, but they never run badly for no reason and breathing is his problem. He loves heavy ground but can't breath on it, so good ground helps him a lot.

I've always loved this horse but he is mentally fragile, although is going the right way. He jumped beautifully, having been a bit novicey last year and we rode him more positively as we wanted to try something different. hopefully he is a National type horse and you'd hope he will take a step forward with more experience as it was only his fifth run over fences. He is a pure natural with an obstacle coming to him. Paul (Nicholls, previous trainer) had a few issues with him but mentally he is coming along the whole time and I was very pleased they allowed me to take him back. He travels and jumps in this deep stuff and if that can do that, it is a big benefit to them. There are lots to look forward to.

He is a lovely horse and we've always liked him. He has just been a bit mentally fragile and immature but it is all coming together and settling down,. He has always had ability and is showing it off now. He did that quite easily, he is a stayer and a chaser, being so big. I'm not sure whether we'll go for a novice or a handicap next but he is a very very nice horse for the future. He is sound and stays and jumps and is a lovely clean horse now that he has sorted his mental fragilities out.
