Tory Reel strikes in early season juvenile hurdle
He ran a nice race on his first flat handicap run in Limerick and then we schooled him and he jumped very well. We said we'd give this a go before there were many horses schooled in the country. He didn't jump quite as well as I thought he would but he jumped well enough to be there with a chance going down to the last and stayed very well. He jumped well but just wasn't quick away from his hurdles. There isn't a winners' race for about two months so we'll go back to the flat in the interim. It is a good start for Highland Reel over hurdles as well as I'd imagine he'll end up being a jumps' sire. I don't know if this is right or not, but he is possibly the youngest horse ever to win a jumps race in Ireland as today's race (the first juvenile hurdle of the season) is six weeks earlier that it usually is.
Delightfantastic wins for 'a jockey in the making'
She was unlucky the last day when she ran into trouble and Harry gave her a great ride today and she settled in. We had another horse in the race and said we'd claim from her and Harry had ridden her in bumpers and knew her. She is free, he settled her and he was very good. He is top class and is a jockey in the making.
Santa Rossa wins Grimes Hurdle, is Galway-bound
the plan was to jump her out - she was shuffled back the last day at Killarney and it didn't suit. They were well strung out at halfway and I thought they went too quick but he (O'Keeffe) said he had plenty of horse and said she jumped and travelled well. She is a quality mare and can be keen but is better in a better race like that. Maybe the way to ride her is with a good gallop and with a bit of light as she seems to settle. She will keep going until the weather changes and the Galway Hurdle might be an option for her and she'll get in now. We might also run her on the flat.
Shoot First hits the target for Byrnes
They went a good honest gallop and he stays well. He ran well here first time out and getting the 8lb bumper allowance made a big difference. He'll probably go handicapping now and that is Ambrose's first winner for me.
McDonogh's Water on the move up the ranks
The race he won in Wexford was for horses which hadn't been placed, which was a help. They went very quick today and it was his first handicap, so I'm thrilled. He is a gorgeous horse, we'll see what the handicapper gives him but he might go to Galway. He won't go on fast ground but they'll have nice ground there. It is super to have J.P. here today and I don't know what we'd do without him! He has four horses in training with me, although two are gone home on their summer holidays.
Alfieri a facile winner for James Reilly
It is great the horse has won and I can't believe how well he won,.
Ted's Gaoth Chuil breezes home at her ease
she was entitled to do that with her runs and is a well bred filly out of a mare (Elyaadi) that stayed well and was second in the Ascot Stakes and Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot for John Queally. She is a half-sister to (stablemate winners) Dewcup and Minnie Dahill and Micheal (Ryan) bred them all. She is a lovely mare and loved the ground. I'm not a big bumper person so she will go jumping hurdles now. She wants a trip, she is bred that way, and she'd win a two-mile flat maiden. She is a lovely sweet mare who jumps a hurdle well.
