Mulcahy shines on Barna Venture
The young lad is improving as much as the horse and he gave him a super ride. This is a difficult horse and he gets on great with him. He is a huge horse, 17 hands, and is hard work and rides out on his own. He is after settling down this year and we've learned how to handle him and get up on him out on the track. The hardest part is getting him to the start and once he gets there, Shane can manage the rest but he's a young mans ride!. Shane is improving and is a grafter and works day and night. We were doing a job last week on the gallop and he gave me a hand until all hours of the night in the heavy rain and he deserves everything he gets and I'll be supporting him plenty. It's great for Francis and Brid Collison who are neighbours of mine and this is my first winner for them.
Well-bred Moyglass Flyer scores on debut
Blackmore moves alongside Townend with a double
She is a good mare and will be better on softer ground. She fell on her last run so getting around today was number one and ideally you'd let her stride along but I didn't want to do that. She's not an easy ride but she jumped brilliantly for Rachael and the horses run for her and gallop the whole way to the line.
Mountain Fox records 25/1 surprise for veteran Oakes
He ran a fortnight ago at Dundalk and I thought he'd come home alone but he ran stinking! The run mesmerised me but I had another horse at home who wasn't well and I presumed he wasn't just right so I schooled him and Ricky said he was a natural hurdler. I picked out this race and said you'll be fourth or fifth with a bit of luck. I ride him out all the time at home and he is a villain to ride. I'm 77 and ride two every day and he's not an easy ride at all.
Western Sea opens account in exciting finish
He had a low competitive mark off 86 and was well backed and we were hopeful of a good run and I thought Joseph's horse (Commandant) would take a lot of beating after last week. I thought we'd be an each-way price and the lads had a few quid on him each-way. He raced very fresh and I thought passing the stands we had no chance as he was too fresh but he kept going. He'll be ok for the winter ground but wouldn't be a glutton for heavy ground and we'll aim at another handicap next. It was unfortunate for Andrew Lynch who did all the schooling on him but got a fall schooling after racing yesterday. He had to go for an x-ray but he's ok. It was hard luck on him. It's great to get these horses from Tommy Ward, from Mountmellick, who is a good supporter and a good man to have in the game.
Lady Quill lands touch after switch to Cleary
She wasn't the easiest to train and Noel Lawlor had the hard work done. I had the simple part and I kept her ticking over. I was confident coming here today as she was working well. She ran in the boss Christy Behan's name today and will run in a four-man syndicate's name, including myself and Christy, the next day. The colours just weren't gone through in time. She is after giving us a lift there and I needed a winner! We'll look for something similar next and it's the jockey's birthday today too and he goes out with a niece of mine. We're all going to meet up at a pint-to-pint meeting tonight!
