Mix opens chasing account in style
Story springs shock as Sam flops
He had plenty of nice work done at home and ran in a couple of point to points but is ground-dependent. He got his ground today, skipped away and jumped a miller,. I ran him in this because he is handicapped over hurdles but weren't any suitable races coming up. I thought this fitted in grand. I don't know what the plan is but I could mix it away between chases and hurdles with him. Once the ground is reasonable, we'll keep going.

Mankhool cosy winner of 'unplaced' maiden hurdle
I probably wasn't the strongest race but he had a good run in Gowran, after a wind op, and I'd say it was a big success,. He was getting the four year old allowance which was massive and Shane was also claiming 7lb. Shane hasn't had a winner for a while (last August) but is such a hard worker and deserves every winner he gets. I hate saying it, but I can't imagine the handicapper will rate the race too high and his Gowran run was probably a better run. He seems to stay well and anything from 2m4f to three miles won't be a bother to him. It's good for Tony and Mike O'Brien who have been with me since I started training and are loyal supporters. Our horses were desperate and weren't right for December or January and there was a lot of things not right but I hope we're in a good place now and can kick on. We're looking forward to the flat season.
Quick double for Hogan with Destiny
I'm thrilled for (owner) Billy Horgan, who sent me up two horses after Terence (O'Brien, previous trainer) told him a change of scenery might be good for him. It was, as he was a bit roughy there,. I thought I was going to win well but missed the last two jumps. It was probably a blessing because I'd have been in front and I'm not sure if he'd have pulled himself up or not. When I put the stick away he rallied for me. He should have won the last day in Clonmel as he made up ten lengths between all the fences each time, and gave it away again. Sean Flanagan rode him and said if he'd have jumped, he'd have been bang there. I brought him back over hurdles to get him confidence and this is good for the yard. There's a good atmosphere when the horses are winning.
