Gordon Elliott, trainer of Fort Smith, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his charge never travelled for the last mile of the race The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Fort Smith, trained by Gordon Elliott, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be Post Race Normal. The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Voices Of Spring, unplaced, ridden by P. Townend, and trained by A.J.Martin. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. P. Townend stated that his instructions were to get his mount to settle and do his best from there because he had ridden him in his first maiden hurdle at Leopardstown and he was very free. He said that he failed to get his mount to settle in the early part of the race, and he pulled his way to the front of the main racing bunch by the top of the hill, at which point he felt the horse had no more to give, and he nursed him home down the hill because he didn't want to drive out a very tired horse. He said if he was to ride the race again, he'd have dropped his mount out stone last and on his own, in an attempt to get with to switch off and drop the bit and be in a position to finish out his race. A.J.Martin confirmed the instructions and stated that he ran his charge in a hood last time out to help him settle, and he thought the horse may have learned how to settle and race, so he left it off today and, in hindsight, this was a mistake. He expressed satisfaction with the ride as he didn't want to see his charge fall in the latter stages under a strong drive when it was obvious the horse had no more to give after running so free. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Voices Of Spring was Post Race Normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered. Andrew J.McNamara, rider of Arctic Wolf (GB) trained by Mrs D.A.Love, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount burst a blood vessel and was pulled up.
