An enquiry was held to consider whether Tom O'Brien, the rider of Strong Pursuit (IRE), which was pulled up on the run in after jumping the final fence, had continued in the race when the horse appeared to be very tired.
The rider was interviewed and recordings of the incident were viewed.
The Veterinary Officer stated that a post-race examination of Strong Pursuit (IRE) failed to reveal any abnormalities and that the gelding was recovering within normal parameters.
The rider explained that Strong Pursuit (IRE) had jumped the second-last fence well, after which he had given the gelding a chance to fill its lungs on the approach to the final fence which he had jumped adequately.
He further explained that shortly after landing Strong Pursuit (IRE) had tired very quickly, with its stride shortening, and he therefore felt it prudent to pull the gelding up rather than complete the course.
His explanation was accepted.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that Sizing Codelco (IRE), placed fourth, lost its right-hind shoe.
