An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after interference on the run to the line when Forge Valley Lad (GB), placed second, ridden by Luke Morris, interfered with Largo Bay (USA), placed third, ridden by George Rooke.
The Stewards considered that the interference had improved Forge Valley Lad (GB)’s placing as the gelding shifted left intimidating Largo Bay (USA) marginally off its intended line and then further crowded and bumped Largo Bay (USA).
With only a nose between them at the line, the Stewards revised the placings as follows: First: Northern (IRE), Second: Largo Bay (USA), Third: Forge Valley Lad (GB), Fourth: Devizes (IRE).
The interference was found to be accidental as Forge Valley Lad (GB) shifted sharply left away from the whip, before being quickly corrected, intimidating and bumping Largo Bay (USA).
The apparent improvement in form of the winner, Northern (IRE), which had never previously been placed, was considered.
Jamie Osborne’s comments that he had no explanation for the performance of the gelding other than that in his opinion it was an uncompetitive race were forwarded to the Head Office of the British Horseracing Authority so they that could be reviewed in conjunction with the previous performances of Northern (IRE), and the gelding was routine tested.
Following the race, Jack Duern reported that Pledge Of Peace (IRE), placed fifth, ran too free.
