An enquiry was held into the running and riding of SOTOMAYOR, ridden by Mr Oscar Palmer and trained by Richard Hannon, which after jumping awkwardly from the stalls, was settled in rear and became detached mid-race, before staying on well to finish eighth, beaten by 11 lengths. The rider and the trainer's representative were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the colt, during routine testing, failed to reveal any abnormalities. The rider, who was having his first ride under rules, stated that his instructions had been to jump out and try to sit, handy, however, SOTOMAYOR threw its head in the air leaving the stalls and was slowly away. Palmer explained that the colt was outpaced throughout and raced lazily, failing to respond to his urgings in the early and middle stages when trying to maintain his position. He added that approaching the 3 furlong marker, he asked SOTOMAYOR for its finishing effort and it had consented to run on passed weakening horses in the home straight. The trainer's representative confirmed the instructions and that he was satisfied with the manner in which the colt had been ridden, particularly considering that things went wrong at the start and SOTOMAYOR can be an ungenuine type who may appreciate stronger handling. He added that the colt had been dropped back in trip and raced without its usual headgear, both factors which may have played a part in the way it raced on this occasion. Their explanations were noted. Being a 7Ib claimer, Mr Palmer was accompanied by a senior rider.

Approximately half a furlong after the start, SOTOMAYOR, placed eighth, edged slightly left-handed, causing the rider of MATRAVERS, unplaced, to take a precautionary check on the rails, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of SOTOMAYOR.
