Santi off the mark in Gowran opener
Raphael Santi got off the mark at the third time of asking in the opening maiden at Gowran Park, running out a cosy winner under Seamus Heffernan.
The son of Excellent Art settled behind the leaders in the early stages of the seven-furlong contest before making his move in the straight.
The 1/2 favourite hit the front over a furlong-and-a-half from home and always looked in command despite running slightly green.
He posted a two-length winning margin over Lonrach with another length-and-a-half further back to Blue White Fire
"He did it well but is still green," said Coolmore representative Gerry Ahern.
"He (Aidan O'Brien) has spoke highly of him all year and it's surprising it's taken him three runs to win his maiden. The penny has just dropped.
"It's good for the stallion. That's three runners and two winners."
Winning jockey Seamie Heffernan said: "Seven furlongs helps when they are learning as it gives you time to get them organised.
"He has lots of speed and is very genuine."
