Golden Raven found plenty inside the final furlong to justify good support in the mile maiden at Navan. Valac travelled well to hit the lead over two furlongs from home but had to give way to the Michael Halford-trained Godolphin gelding inside the final furlong.
Shane Foley got a good tune from the son of Raven's Pass as he stayed on well for a length-and-a-quarter success. McGuigan got up to pip Valac for the runner-up spot.
The winner had been backed from 11/4 this morning and was eventually returned the 11/10 favourite.
He was making his second started having shaped with promise when fifth to Red Napoleon over course and distance earlier in the month. McGuigan had been second in the same race.
"He's a big baby really. Shane said he got a bit unbalanced but once he met the rising ground he was always getting there," said Halford.
"He'll get further when he gets stronger. He's a horse that'll get a mile and a quarter. He's a fine big horse.
On turning the tables with McGuigan he replied: "I expected him to. He travelled lovely the last day and just got tired.
"We'll see what the handicapper does and take it from there."
