Gorey hangs up his boots

Shane Gorey retired from the saddle at Gowran Park today to take up a role with business and employer association Ibec.
The apprentice has been studying for a masters degree over the last four years and leaves the racing industry having ridden over 80 winners during his career.
Gorey, who has been associated with Dermot Weld throughout his time, had his last ride on Cupertino who finished tenth in the second race.
“I've been in college for the last four years to get my masters in human resources and industrial relations,” said Gorey.
“I rode about 85 winners during my career and this will be a big change now!”

Gary started out as a trainee/assistant journalist with the Sporting Life newspaper and has worked in the racing industry for over 25 years. He has been with the Press Association since 2013 and won the Irish Field Nap Table in 2016. He enjoys working with horses and trained his own horse, Mamaslittlestar, to win a point-to-point in 2019.
