Favourite backers have Cathal Landers to thank for the win of Brogine in the Tote Supporting Irish Racing Handicap Hurdle at Limerick today as the jockey managed to steer the mare to success despite putting his right shoulder out jumping the final flight.

Landers had produced Brogine from off the pace to lead approaching the final flight but the rider appeared to be uncomfortable jumping that last obstacle. Brogine kept galloping on the run-in, with Landers pulling his stick through to his left hand close home as the pair held on for a half length win over Aasleagh Dawn

Brogine, backed on course from 9/4 to 6/4f, was following up a win at Ballinrobe on Monday and afterwards local winning owner/breeder/trainer Seamus Braddish revealed “Cathal did exactly what we wanted him to do; he had ridden her the last day so he knew what to do and it was a very cool ride.

“He put his shoulder out with his jump at the last. He lifted his hand too high with the whip and his shoulder came out.”

He added “we will give her a rest now for a few weeks. We were a bit concerned coming out again so soon after Ballinrobe. The three miles which we had never went before was also a concern. We've learned today that three miles is okay for her.

"I haven't looked too far ahead but we would be looking towards Galway. We'll wait and see what the handicapper does as well, he'll play a major part too."

Jockey Landers was later stood down for the rest of the day due to his shoulder injury.
