It was very straightforward and he is rated 97 so you'd expect him to be winning his maiden like that. He hit a flat spot turning in and I thought 'what the hell' but Colin said to go further and said he ran to his rating,. I'd have gone a mile with him but Colin called it right and said to go 10 (furlongs). I take no credit for it as I'm lucky to be in the right place - Adrian (Keatley, previous trainer) found and sourced the horse and bought a cracking horse and has done a grand job with him and we've just brought him along quietly. It's not nice circumstances but that is horse racing. He is staying with me and I seem to be gathering Hong Kong-based owners at the minute, rather than selling to them. It has been 20-odd years of selling to them so it is nice to have it this way around. They are lovely horses to have and most trainers will train these horses to win and I am lucky with my team of horses at the minute.

You'd be very impressed with that. We're delighted with her. Going forward she is very ground dependent. Mr Strawbridge has been very good to keep her in training with us as a four-year-old and he's been very patient. She needs cut in the ground and she won't be running in all those good races if it's quick. She'll be even more effective over an extra furlong or two, even further going forward. It's all ground dependent and it's frustrating when you have a lovely filly like that but Mr Strawbridge has been very good to us and left it to us to find the right races with the right conditions and no pressure on us. One day it will be justified with her. She's obviously in the Pretty Polly and the Tattersalls Gold Cup but she'll not be going near them if it's good to firm. If it's yielding like that or soft we'd be very confident. Colin said she improved from the first day. She was gassy then and it obviously didn't help when she got wiped out on the first bend. She went down on her knees and that lit her up as she was fresh for her first run. That was a prep run as well and today he said she was a different filly. She should that day but she did win today and you'd have to be impressed with the way she did win. She got every bit of the trip last time and if today was a mile-four she'd be running in it, that's no problem. Today we would be worried that it's a bit short for her and that's why we were happy with the way she put it to bed.

That was great. I've just spoken to Mr Strawbridge and he's over the moon. It's one thing doing these deals and getting big clients into the yard but ultimately you have to deliver. That was a big one for us as he's after entrusting me with the filly and believed what I told him I hoped she was. She is after winning on heavy ground and has won on good to firm ground which is important as if she is going to have a career in the States she has to handle ground like that. She was bought to go to America eventually but she will have a three-year-old career in Ireland. Our horses improve from their first run and we don't aim to gun them first time out. She's not ground dependent and she has a temperament. I'd say she will be supplemented for the Irish Guineas. There is no reason why we won't use today's prize-money for that.

The second closing of the Irish Guineas was the other day an I said to the lads 'ah we'll leave it don't be silly',. She did that well and went through the ground, we know she wants it. If it was good ground we wouldn't have run her because she wants every bit of a mile. You'd have to be impressed with her and her temperament is to die for. She does everything I want at home, I'm impressed with her. I'm not a fan of buying fillies because unless you get black-type you are stuck with them. When you have them this good it makes up for all the others. We'll go home, sit down and make a plan. The dream is still alive at the moment but we don't have big early closing entries with her. I'm not a traveller, I love staying at home, so we'll find something here for her and there will be no firm in it. There's every chance she could come back here next month but if a good offer comes in she'll be sold because she's a filly. This is the first batch of fillies we've ever bought. She's named after my daughter Kerri's friend. I used to take the mickey out of her when she was in school and the little girl was coming home with her I'd say 'who is coming home' and she'd say 'Steph' and I'd say 'who's Steph?'. It used to drive them insane. So by coincidence we named this horse after her and it turned out to be a good one. The horses are well and I'm delighted with them and the ways things are going. The only negative is that I didn't have the balls to put her in the Guineas.

Lovely filly but she's clueless and very green. She did improve for her run in a lovely maiden at Leopardstown but it was only the last 100 yards there that she put her head down and settled it fairly quick. She'll get a mile and two next year no problem. We have her in the Listed (Staffordstown Stud Stakes) race at Navan on Sunday. We'll just see how she comes out of the race and it could be an option, or we could wait and let her grow up over the winter and try and get black type next year. She is a filly we like and she has been going the right way since her first run. She will improve a lot again from that.
