Bay proves tough as Granite to land finale under Whelan
The Jarlath Fahey trained Granite Bay won for the third time this season when staying on strongly under Ronan Whelan to land the concluding Jet, Peggy & Eamonn O'Carroll Memorial Handicap at Listowel. Tue 24th SepGranite Bay putting a sequence together
Granite Bay supplemented his victory in Cork with another in the concluding Roscommon Racecourse Handicap over an extended mile and a-half. Mon 20th MayFirst double for Jarlath Fahey
Jarlath Fahey and Ronan Whelan, successful with Grand City Hall earlier, rounded off the evening in style when Granite Bay landed the three-year-old handicap. Fri 10th May
After race at Listowel Tue, 24th Sep, 2024 (1st)
it was a great win as it was a competitive race. Ronan said he was struggling on the ground but said he once he came alive coming down the back, he was reasonably confident he would run a big one. We knew all along that he was a staying horse in the making although I didn't think it would happen in his three-year-old career. He is progressing with every run having been very babyish earlier in the year and we'll look for another race before the season ends as he has proven he goes on easy ground. He has been schooled over hurdles at Roger Loughran's and is well able to jump, if that's the route the lads want to go.

After race at Roscommon Mon, 20th May, 2024 (1st)
It's great that he followed (up). We were a bit concerned about the ground, we were hoping for a few showers during the day and were debating about whether we'd run him or not. Ronan said he'd be comfortable on good ground, but we just feel that he's a horse that would like to get his toe in. He is a bit big and immature yet. He's a work in progress, he seems to be improving and we're delighted with him. Ronan said it was plenty quick enough down the back straight for him which is unusual here. He said when he met the rising ground he was more comfortable on that. He will handle good ground when he matures a little bit more. It's great that he's won two and fingers crossed he's progressing. We'll keep him to the normal handicaps, he's only coming up through the ranks and learning his job. He's after having two quicks runs so we won't be looking for anything immediately with him. We'll freshen him up a little bit, it's a long season still ahead of us.

After race at Cork Fri, 10th May, 2024 (1st)
It was a good day's work and is my first double. In the last few years since Jennies Jewel won at Royal Ascot, I've concentrated more on the flat and have 10 in training. That number keeps us busy and today was great. We were concerned about how he'd handle the drier ground but Ronan said he'd handle it and he gave him a great ride. . He has a good staying pedigree and we think the more he goes up in distance, the more he'll improve as the year goes on.
