WYER TEAMS UP WITH IRIS

Lorcan Wyer was today handed the mount on hot favourite Brother Of Iris in the Pertemps Great Yorkshire Chase at Doncaster.

He has been chosen by Mary Reveley to take the place of sidelined stable-jockey Peter Niven and of Tony Dobbin, who deputised when the gelding won at Wetherby last time out.

Wyer had ben set to go to Cheltenham on Saturday to ride Simply Dashing but has switched to Doncaster, on the understanding that Niven will get back on board the leading Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup hope when he is fit.

"I've been approached to take the ride on Brother Of Iris in the Great Yorkshire Chase and it has been confirmed this morning that I have been booked to ride," he said on the Racing Channel.

"Mrs Reveley added that if it did happen to be a downpour she would think again about running but at the moment she is happy with the horse and he should run.

"But she said 'Niv' is the man and if he gets back it is his ride."

Brother Of Iris is 2-1 favourite for Saturday's race with Coral and William Hill.

He has been beaten only once in six completed starts over fences and is 12-1 joint-third favourite with Ladbrokes for the Gold Cup.

Explaining the choice of Wyer, Mrs Reveley said: "He has ridden him before and has won on him at Doncaster."

But the trainer had a warning for those who have made her gelding - who missed an intended engagement at Wetherby late last month - such a short price for Saturday's race.

"It is a stupid price," she said.

"He was laid off over Christmas and the New Year with a twisted joint and he missed a couple of weeks' work.

"He is as fit as we can get him at home but there will still be a bit of improvement in him."

Wyer added: "I haven't been asked to school him this week but I rode him once and won on him at Doncaster and that was the first time I'd sat on him.

"He's a proper horse but he still has a bit to go to be a genuine Gold Cup contender, although he has plenty of improvement in him.

"The horse has got a tough task to give weight away at Doncaster."

No decision has been made over the participation of Course Doctor in Saturday's race with George Moore's chestnut also entered at Ayr and Cheltenham the same afternoon.
