WILLIAMS STRIKES GOLD WITH TOBOUGG

Australian jockey Craig Williams enjoyed his first British Group One success when giving Tobougg a confident ride in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket today.

Williams settled Mick Channon`s colt, the 7-4 favourite, in behind the front-running Cashel Prince with market rival Mozart taking a good hold towards the outside.

As the pacemaker began to weaken approaching the quarter-mile pole Mozart went to the front with Tobougg challenging on the rails.

But Tobougg was soon in control and strode clear inside the final furlong to score a shade comfortably by one and a quarter lengths from the staying-on Noverre (7-1) who in turn finished a head in front of 40-1 chance Tempest.

Mozart faded to finish fourth.

A delighted Williams said: 'I`d like to thank Mick Channon and Sheikh Ahmed (owner) for giving me the opportunity to ride him.'

The jockey was clearly impressed and added: 'This horse could be anything.'

Channon believes there is better to come from the son of Barathea.

He said: 'I always said his biggest danger would be himself. He just doesn`t concentrate. He`s still learning but he`s done it nice.

'He was half looking at the crowd and Craig just had to give him one to wake him up.'

Following this victory Tobougg will go into winter quarters a leading fancy - 8-1 with the Tote - for the Sagitta 2000 Guineas and the West Ilsley trainer is hoping his charge makes up into a Derby horse but has doubts about his stamina.

'He`s a trainer`s dream,' enthused Channon. 'He`s so relaxed I certainly think he`ll get a mile and a quarter but as for a mile and a half, only time will tell.'
