WELD BREAKS RECORD WITH PEACH OF A WINNER

Trainer Dermot Weld broke the all-time training record for winners in Ireland when Georgia Peach landed the Victory Note European Breeders Fund Maiden at Naas today.

The two-year-old, ridden by Pat Shanahan, defeated Factice Royal by a half-length but had to survive a stewards` inquiry before the record of 2,578 winners was confirmed.

Weld equalled the total of Senator Jim Parkinson, which has stood since 1947, at Galway on Sunday.

The trainer said: 'I`m delighted.

'I`m particularly pleased for Pat Shanahan _ he`s the ultimate professional and has never ridden a bad race for me.'

The winner was bred not far from Naas by Michael Smurfit, who retains an interest in the horse and celebrates his 64th birthday today.
