VALENTINO PRIMED

Connections of the Sagitta 2000 Guineas challenger Primo Valentino today insisted they had seen nothing to concern them in the British trials.

"Nothing has come out of those trials at Newmarket last week, there's isn't anything that frightens us there," said trainer Peter Harris' spokesman Steve Harrison.

"As far as we are concerned the best trial we have seen was Giant's Causeway's defeat of older horses in Ireland."

Primo Valentino, the winner of the Mill Reef and Middle Park Stakes last year, will be tackling the 2000 Guineas on Saturday week without the benefit of a previous outing.

"Ideally Peter would have liked to have run him in a trial but the weather has held us up," said Harrison.

"With one thing and another Peter felt it would be rushing the horse to give him a race before the Guineas.

"But going straight for the Guineas shouldn't present a major problem, although he was beaten on his first outing last year he is a reasonably sharp horse."

The stable is also confident that Primo Valentino will be capable of producing his best over mile.

The colt is a son of the sprinter Primo Dominie and has done all his winning over six furlongs.

"Peter's convinced he will stay. It's true that Primo Dominie is not an influence for stamina but the dam is a daughter of Dancing Brave so there's plenty of staying blood," said Harrison.

The stable is expecting Primo Valentino's regular rider Pat Eddery to be on board on 2000 Guineas day.
