VALENTINO COULD BE GUINEAS STAR

Primo Valentino is ready to try to shoot down the Classic big guns in the Sagitta 2000 Guineas.

Peter Harris' charge is in prime shape for the £300,000 showdown at Newmarket on Saturday week.

'Nothing has come out of the trials at Newmarket that frightens us,' said Harris' spokesman Steve Harrison.

'As far as we are concerned the best trial came from Giant's Causeway when he beat older horses in Ireland.'

Primo Valentino, the winner of the Mill Reef and Middle Park Stakes last season, was among 41 horses left in the first colts' Classic at today's forfeit stage.

The wet spring weather means Primo Valentino will be tackling the race without the benefit of an outing this season.

'Ideally Peter would have liked to have run him in a trial but the weather has held us up,' said Harrison.

'With one thing and another Peter felt it would be rushing the horse to give him a race before the Guineas.

'But going straight for the Guineas shouldn't present a major problem, although he was beaten on his first outing last year he is a reasonably sharp horse.'

The exact make-up of the challenge from Godolphin and Aidan O'Brien is still uncertain.

They are keeping plenty of options with a representation of 11 - six for Godolphin and five horses for O'Brien - in the remaining acceptors for the #300,000 race at Newmarket on Saturday week.

O'Brien, a winner of the race previously with King of Kings, is responsible for Giant's Causeway, the ante-post favourite, as well as Bach, Bernstein, Monashee Mountain and Royal Kingdom.

Godolphin, bidding to add to the victories of Mark of Esteem and Island Sands, have Bachir, Broche, China Visit, Fath, Glad Master and Zoning.

But China Visit is only in the race as a precaution as he is set to tackle the Kentucky Derby.

Fath, who narrowly beat Broche in a trial at Dubai last week, was put forward as a possible 2000 Guineas ride for Frankie Dettori.

But Dettori, the rider of Mark of Esteem and Island Sands, is likely to miss the race to ride China Visit.

'I could be in America so I don't who will ride Fath,' he told the Racing Channel. 'But Fath ran really well in the trial - he's come along fine and it looks an open Guineas.'

Richard Hills rode Fath in the trial and might get the call up in the big race, though the jockey could also partner Misraah.

Trainer Richard Hannon is another with a strong hand in the 2000 Guineas - he has left in last week's Newmarket winners Cape Town and Umistim as well as Kingsdon and Mana-Mou Bay.

David Elsworth and Barry Hills could both be double-handed, the former with Alfini and Scarteen Fox and the latter with Distant Music and Race Leader.

Petrushka was among 35 horses remaining at the latest acceptance stage for the Sagitta 1000 Guineas on Sunday week.

The teams of Godolphin and O'Brien are only slightly weaker than the colts' equivalent with four entries apiece.

Trainer Mick Channon, still seeking his first Classic victory, has a possible three-pronged attack with his main hope Seazun being backed up by Areydha and Miletrian.

Godolphin's Bintalreef is now the second favourite behind last week's impressive Newmarket winner Petrushka after defeating Teggiano by four lengths in a Dubai trial.

Dettori, who will be hoping to be back from America to ride this one, said: 'She was very impressive and we're all very positive about her but don't look into the form too deeply as Teggiano got tired on me.

'Bintalreef will be our main aim for the 1000 Guineas and she should give Michael Stoute's filly (Petrushka) something to think about.'
