Robert Tyner yesterday praised the recently retired Davy Russell, who went out on a winner at Thurles last Sunday.

The Kinsale handler was a big supporter of Russell early in his career and he was one of the trainers the multiple champion jockey highlighted in his retirement statement on Sunday.

Speaking after the victory of Big Debates at Fairyhouse on Wednesday Tyner said:-

“I'm delighted he went out on a winner and in one piece. It's great that he went out on his own terms.

“We go back a long way and he rode a lot of winners for me early on in his career as an amateur.

“He wasn't easy to get him in the finish and you never actually knew when you had him, you could be going to the scales!

“He could have four rides in a race up until late on just to make sure, he was so competitive.

“It actually took him a while to ride his first winner, I think it was for Jimmy Mangan. I remember he was getting impatient actually but once he got off the ground he was away then.

“He was some jockey.”
