TWO DOZEN BRITS RAID PUNCHESTOWN

A total of 24 British-trained horses are set to run at Punchestown tomorrow, with six in the line-up for the feature Heineken Gold Cup.

Nicky Henderson's dual-Cathcart Chase winner Stormyfairweather bypassed last Saturday's Whitbread Gold Cup at Sandown in favour of tomorrow's £72,000 Grade One event - one of two races to be shown live on BBC1.

Stormyfairweather will be joined by Macgeorge, Mulligan, Tresor De Mai, Niki Dee and Addington Boy - the two last-named having finished third and fifth respectively in the Martell Grand National last month.

The home team in the 25-furlong contest consists of Boss Doyle, Irish Grand National winner Commanche Court, Danoli, Dorans Pride, Micko's Dream and the novice Native Upmanship, who won last week's Power Gold Cup at Fairyhouse in good style.

One-time top-class chaser Danoli has been difficult to train since winning the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Leopardstown in 1997 but connections are hoping for a good run from the 12-year-old, who won over two and a half miles at Navan on his most recent outing.

"He's been working well and we are quite happy with him," trainer Tom Foley said.

"He did well last time because the trip was not his best and the ground was a bit tacky and heavy for him. He'll like the ground at Punchestown tomorrow.

"Shay Barry will ride him again and he just has to put in a clear round.

"We are looking for him to get into a battle from the second last and then he'll have a chance. Let's hope we get to that stage."

Henderson also runs Big Matt (Emo Oil Handicap Chase) and Far Horizon (Paddy Power Bookmakers Champion Flat Race).

Among Big Matt's rivals are compatriots Wise King from Jim Old's yard, Martin Pipe's Ashwell Boy, the James Adam-trained Monnaie Forte and Tom McGovern's improving novice Grass Island.

Pipe, who is also responsible for Tresor De Mai, runs King Balthasaar in the bumper and Copeland in the Stanley Cooker Champion Novice Hurdle, in which Philip Hobbs saddles Coral Cup winner What's Up Boys.

Hobbs has Lone Soldier in the J F Dunne Insurances Handicap Hurdle and Rooster Booster in the opening Noel C Ryan Memorial Novice Hurdle.

The latter's rivals include Steve Brookshaw's Wadsworth and the Nerys Dutfield-trained Festival Leader.

Ralph Smith saddles Dick The Taxi in the Flat race and the British contingent is completed with a four-strong challenge for the concluding Cox's Cash & Carry Champion Hunters' Chase.

Caroline Bailey, who won the race last year with Castle Mane, runs Gunner Welburn this time with fellow raiders Castle Court, Last Option, Satchmo joining him in the line-up.
