TURF CLUB TO SOFTEN LINE

The Turf Club moved yesterday to try and soften the battle lines between themselves and the Irish Horseracing Authority over the Minister for Finance's amalgamation plans.

The Turf Club chief executive Brian Kavanagh urged the entire racing industry to work towards a consensus after a weekend which saw the Turf Club and the Association Of Irish Racecourses form a joint committee in response to a meeting scheduled for tonight between various professional interest groups within racing.

'We are a relatively small industry and we have to work together,' said Kavanagh. 'Everyone is positive about the money and a secure funding of the sport, including the Turf Club. We just want to have a much more detailed look at the structures because the Turf Club and the racecourses are the ones required to give.'

Over the weekend, the IHA also reportedly said its own funding of the industry will have to be cut if the Turf Club, the AIR and the IHA don't merge.
