Travelmate, a close fifth to Rogan Josh in the Melbourne Cup last November, returns to the track in the Further Flight Conditions Stakes at Nottingham tomorrow.
James Fanshawe's six-year-old failed to win last season but ran well in defeat including when beaten a short head by Far Cry in the Northumberland Plate and a two-length runner-up to Vicious Circle in the Tote Ebor.
"He took his trip to Australia really well," Fanshawe said today. "He seems fine and looks good in his coat."
The Newmarket trainer has no definite campaign mapped out for Travelmate.
He said: "There are various options open to us. We'll make a plan after tomorrow and as far as the Melbourne Cup is concerned it is a long way off and we'll make a decision around July time."
Barry Hills had hoped to have a runner in the race named in honour of his fine stayer but Rainbow Ways has not been declared for the 14-furlong contest.
"It's got very soft," explained Hills. "It's a pity we couldn't have a runner but we can't do everything."
Other runners include Taufan's Melody, winner of the 1998 Caulfield Cup and fourth in the same year's Melbourne Cup, and Yorkshire one place behind Lady Herries's nine-year-old at Flemington, who will both be having their first race since at Colwick Park.
