TORRENTIAL RAIN CAUSES HAYDOCK ABANDONMENT

Wet weather forced the abandonment of racing at Haydock Park today after just three contests had been staged.

Heavy downpours began after the first race and continued for some time.

The stewards held an inspection after the third event and initially gave the go ahead for racing to continue.

But after the runners went down to the start a further inspection was held at the home bend and the stewards decided it was impossible to continue.

An inspection will be held at 7.30 tomorrow morning to decide whether the prestige Stanley Leisure Sprint Cup card can take place.

Clerk of the course Lisa Rowe said: 'We have had six millimetres of rain since 7.00 this morning.

'The stewards and jockeys found the track to be unraceable so we have had to abandon today.

'Tomorrow`s racing is subject to a 7.30am inspection.

'We are extremely hopeful.'
