Jockey Jason Tate picked up a heavy ban at a hearing of the disciplinary committee of the Jockey Club in London today.
Tate, who incurred the wrath of the Lingfield stewards following his use of the whip aboard Failed To Hit at the Surrey track on December 22nd, was automatically referred to Portman Square under the totting-up procedure.
After considering evidence from Tate and viewing video recordings of the race the committee found Tate to be guilty of improper riding and in breach of Jockey Club Instruction H9 headed "Use of the Whip" in that he used his whip with excessive frequency.
Taking into account that Tate had been suspended for 15 days since March 13th last year, the committee suspended him from riding for 16 days, of which four will be deferred until June 30th this year.
It suspended him from riding from next Tuesday to January 22nd on days on which Flat racing is scheduled to take place.
The committee also instructed him to attend the British Racing School on a date to be arranged to receive instruction regarding his use of the whip.
