Fresh from saddling a winner at Galway last week, Conor O'Dwyer was again on the mark at Sligo this evening, as his Sunrise Lady claimed the concluding Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares (Ladies Pro/Am) Flat Race.
Successful in a point-to-point at Ballingarry in June, the daughter of Scorpion ran a fine race to finish third on her racecourse debut at Limerick last month.
Sent off at 4/1 this evening she made virtually all. She was joined three furlongs out by Mysloegin but was ridden and regained the lead at the furlong pole, keeping on strongly to win by six lengths under Katie Walsh (first winner at Sligo).
The aforementioned Mysloegin (10s this morning and from 7/2 to 5/2 on-course) had to settle for second under Joanna Walton for Jimmy Finn, while the 7/4 favourite Dalouga was two and a quarter lengths back in third with Lisa O'Neill aboard for Gordon Elliott.
O'Dwyer said afterwards: "We've liked her all along. I bought her off John Berry. She won her point-to-point for me and I always thought she'd go to the track.
"I wasn't sure if she was a bumper mare but Katie was brilliant on her. She was clever on her.
"We'll keep her going for the summer now - she'll go jumping a hurdle.
"She's a good looking mare - some of the Scorpions can be a bit hot but we won't be giving her back!"
STEWARDS REPORT
The Stewards fined John Neilan, trainer, E350 for lodging a passport in respect of Charlotte Wells in which the vaccinations did not conform with the provisions of Rule 91. The Stewards allowed the horse to run on receipt of the trainer's written assurance that the vaccinations were in order.
