Nans Best stayed on best to peg back front-runner Kahuna in the Narrow Space Gallery Handicap at Clonmel.
Pat Smullen was completing a quick double when his mount got the better of the leader inside the final furlong to post a length-and-three quarters success.
"That's lovely. The horses are all running well and he's entitled to that," said trainer Liam McAteer.
"He's rated 105 over hurdles and has won over a mile at Ayr before. He's a bit lazy and is always keeping a bit to himself, which is always good.
"We'll find something at Galway for him and he could run there twice as there is a handicap hurdle for him and a beginners chase. He's a super jumper.
"He won't run much in between. He's a horse that doesn't take much galloping and he's easy to train."
