SWAN OUT OF LUCK IN MUSSELBURGH RAID

Charlie Swan's three-horse raid at Musselburgh today ended without a victory for the trainer-jockey.

However, all three horses managed to take some prizemoney back to his Co. Tipperary yard.

Hot Bunny, Swan's runner in the opening Tom Mcconnell Memorial Juvenile Novices' Hurdle, finished a six-length runner-up to 1-5 favourite Pertino, trained by Malcolm Jefferson and ridden by Graham Lee.

This Is Serious filled the same position in the J.R McNair Novices' Handicap Hurdle, beaten a head by 33-1 chance Setting Sun, a first winner of the season for permit-holder Norman Waggott.

And Heroic finished third behind 1-2 favourite Wintertide and Heracles in the concluding Weatherbys 'Stars Of Tomorrow' Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race.

Swan explained his reasons for crossing the Irish Sea to the Racing Channel: "I'm looking for a bit of decent ground and opportunities for horses. We only race once during the week at home - it's ridiculous really.

"There's a maiden hurdle on Saturday with 89 entries - it's crazy."

Swan also had news of Istabraq on whom he will be attempting to complete a hat-trick of Smurfit Champion Hurdle victories in March.

He added: "Aidan (O'Brien) tells me he's in great form so hopefully we can get him there in one piece in as good form as he was at Leopardstown last time."

There was one success for an Irish raider when the Sue Bramall-trained Heritage landed the Anderson Strathern Challenge Trophy (Novices' Handicap Chase).

The six-year-old, ridden by John Cullen, pulled clear from two out to defeat J J Baboo by five lengths.

Mrs Bramall said: "These were smaller fences, the track is nice and sharp, he could have his own way and the ground was fine. I'm very pleased.

"John rode a blinder on him I thought. He's riding very well at the moment."

Wintertide's trainer and jockey Richard Fahey and Lorcan Wyer initiated a 5-1 double when Chief Monarch defied top-weight in the Tote Bookmakers Hurdle.
