STRATH ROYAL TO WAIT FOR BETTER GROUND

Connections are to give veteran chaser Strath Royal another chance to show some of his old sparkle, it was revealed today.

The Owen Brennan-trained 14-year-old has not shown his best form this season and was pulled up behind Tullymurry Toff at Wetherby last week.

Brennan said: "There is very little planned at the moment. We'll have to see how he is.

"He's been dropped in the handicap, he's now rated 120 and we have a chance for the first time to get him in a little race.

"We have no plans to run him for a while, we will wait until the ground dries up."

The gelding has been a stalwart for Brennan's Worksop yard, winning 20 races including the Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase at Wetherby in 1997 and the Charlie Hall Chase at the same track the following year.

However, retirement may loom if he disappoints again.

"We'll probably give him one more run. If he runs badly again I think that will be it," Brennan added.

"He's won 20 races, he's 14 so he owes us nothing. We don't want him trailing in behind them."
