STOUTE HAPPY WITH KALANISI

Sir Michael Stoute was doing his best to shrug off doubts over Kalanisi ahead of his bid for glory at Saturday`s Breeders` Cup meeting.

Worries over the colt`s ability to handle the sharp track at Churchill Downs surfaced once again.

In a work-out on the course at Louisville, Kentucky, he appeared ill-at-ease on the seven-furlong turf circuit.

One observer reported that Kalanisi had briefly lost his footing, though this was out of view of the work watchers.

Kalanisi, the favourite for the Breeders` Cup Turf, had tried to run out and dumped his jockey when working over the track on Sunday.

Stoute, however, insisted, that there wasn`t a problem. 'I was quite happy and everything went well,' he said.

'I didn`t see much of him. I wanted to see him come round the corner and once he cantered away and went down the straight I couldn`t see him at all.

'Kalanisi looks well-balanced and I don`t think there`s too much to worry about. He was accompanied by a pony to make sure he had a clear round and I didn`t see a problem.'

Kalanisi has hardened to 5-2 favourite with William Hill and 3-1 with Coral for the one-and-a-half-mile contest.

His price has been trimmed after it emerged that the ex-British-trained pair Craigsteel and Boatman will miss the race through injury.

Their absence means that the former Henry Cecil charge Subtle Power, a winner of the King Edward VII Stakes, now gets a place in the field.

Whether Montjeu also takes his chance in the same race remains uncertain.

Bookmakers William Hill believe there is some doubt, quoting the French ace at 4-1 'with a run'.

But John Hammond`s charge has made the journey across the Atlantic and connections have shelled out the US60,000 to enter him for the race.

Montjeu arrived on Monday but was still in the quarantine block yesterday and unable to stretch his legs. He is expected to be put through his paces on the track today.

The present weather in Kentucky is hardly helping the cause of Montjeu who has seen his status tarnished in the last month with defeats in the Prix de l`Arc de Triomphe and Dubai Champion Stakes.

The colt has been troubled by an ankle problem and might operate better on soft ground.

But the sun was beating down with temperatures approaching 70 degrees and the turf track is riding firm.

Only showers are forecast over the next few days, so conditions are unlikely to change appreciably for the race.

Fruits Of Love, a 25-1 outsider for the Turf race, showed his well-being in a canter round the track.

Two of Britain`s other main Breeders` Cup challengers Petrushka and Crimplene were also given spins.

Crimplene, one of the stars of the summer, may be ending her racing career on Saturday.

'I`d dearly love to train her next year but this could be her last race though it will be up to Sheikh Mohammed in the end,' revealed her trainer Clive Brittain.

Crimplene is offered at a generous-looking 16-1 with William Hill and Coral in the Breeders` Cup Distaff.

'I feel she will run a big race, although there are two good dirt fillies in there, so I can`t say we`ll win,' said Brittain who secured a Breeders` Cup win with another filly Pebbles.

'She`s been on the go for a long time but I still believe she`s as good as she was in the summer.

'She came in-season when she got here but she`s just coming out of it now and it won`t be a problem for Saturday.'

Kalanisi`s stablemate Petrushka is 13-8 with Coral and 15-8 with William Hill for the Filly and Mare Turf race.

'She has had a long season and I wouldn`t want to underestimate the effects of that but Petrushka is very dependable and has a good temperament,' said Stoute.

'It`s encouraging that the European horses seem to do well here and in New York. It`s a help that there`s not too much of a temperature change.'

The Americans appear supremely confident that Fusaichi Pegasus will take the biggest event, the Breeders` Cup Classic.

The Kentucky Derby winner is 15-8 with William Hill and 7-4 with Coral for the race over one and a quarter miles on the dirt.

But home race fans have not yet had the chance to run the rule over main European threat Giant`s Causeway.

Aidan O`Brien`s 'iron horse' was expected to complete his journey from Ireland later today.

But the colt will then be required to have a spell in quarantine and is unlikely to have a spin on the track until Thursday.

Distant Music, part of a strong European team for the Mile, was cut to 8-1 (from 11s) by William Hill and 12-1 (from 16s) by Coral.

Luca Cumani`s Arkadian Hero, the main hope from across the Atlantic for the Mile, is 5-1 with William Hill and a point longer with Coral for the same race.
