STEWARDS IMPOSE 10-DAY BAN

Apprentice Ian Mongan was hit with a 10-day ban by the Salisbury stewards this afternoon after being found guilty of `irresponsible riding of a major nature` aboard the unplaced Rayik in the Axminster 100 Apprentices Handicap (division one).

Mongan, who is based with Brighton trainer Gary Moore, manoeuvred his mount sharply left over half a mile from the finish and in the process badly hampered Famous and Spirit of Khambani as he carried them across the course.

Stewards` secretary Patrick Hibbert-Foy explained the ban, saying: 'The stewards decided that he switched left, causing interference to the other two horses when it should have been obvious that would be the outcome.

'That is why the stewards imposed the 10-day suspension which runs from October 6-17 inclusively.

'The maximum for this offence is 10 days and the stewards decided it was only right as they took the view that his manoeuvre bordered on dangerous riding.'

Two other riders on the receiving end of suspensions today were Paul Quinn and Michael Roberts at Brighton.

They respectively rode the winners of the first and second races at the seaside course but were both found guilty of irresponsible riding of a minor nature.
