SINNDAR DOUBLES UP AT CURRAGH

Sinndar showed a brilliant turn of foot to add the Budweiser Irish Derby to his Epsom crown at the Curragh today.

The Aga Khan's son of Grand Lodge etched his name in the record books with a stunning nine-length victory from Glyndebourne - claiming a massive $1million bonus in the process.

The race certainly caught the imagination of the public with bookmakers reporting the Derby to be the biggest betting race in Irish history with £624,258 wagered.

Settled in midfield the winner was scrubbed along turning into the straight but once he was asked the questions by Johnny Murtagh two furlongs out he took it over from pacemaker Raypour and pulled clear right to the line.

He saw no other horse from there on in with Glynebourne running on to claim second.

He finished a length-and-a-half clear of better fancied stablemate Ciro while Raypour kept on well from his pacemaking role to take fourth.

French Derby victor Holding Court, who had raced in third for most of the race, weakened to finish only sixth.

Holding Court's trainer Michael Jarvis had no explanation for the poor run of the French Derby winner.

'We haven't found anything wrong with him. He just didn't run his race today. Philip said he felt very flat.'

Unfortunately 2,000 Guineas winner King's Best left proceedings when pulled up with just over half a mile gone.

John Oxx nominated L'Arc de Triomphe as the target for the three-year-old afterwards.

'That was terrific' said a delighted Oxx afterwards.

'He ran very lazy. They went a great gallop and it was a very strong pace which switched him off. My other horses did their job well.

' He was rolling about at the top of the hill and I thought that he wanted to be going a bit better at that stage but once Johnny got a crack into him two furlongs out he just took off.'

'Johnny was scrubbing him along but he said he always knew he had plenty in the tank.'

'He has probably improved again since Epsom and looks to be still on the upgrade.'

'The Arc is the obvious target for him and we'll get a prep race into him before that.

When quizzed about the million dollar bonus for completing the Epsom-Irish Derby double Oxx quipped: 'I guess his Highness will be able to put in a few more boxes now.'

'I couldn't give a damn if I see any of the money. This is a great day. A dream come true.'

The Aga Khan missed his star perform as he was attending the funeral of his grandfather's widow in Egypt.

Sinndar was given a provisional mark of 128 by handicapper Gary O'Gorman following his success.
