SHIVA SET FOR NEWMARKET REPEAT

Rely on Shiva to prove too good for her rivals in the Weatherbys Earl Of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket tomorrow.

The Henry Cecil-trained five-year-old has reportedly suffered from knee problems and has raced only five times.

However she won her first three starts, including this race last year when she comfortably outpointed Haami by a length and a half, showing a nice turn of foot off a slow pace.

There was better still to come from the mare.

Shiva travelled over to Ireland last May to contest the Group One Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh and she scored an emphatic two-and-a-half-length victory over the mighty Daylami.

She then ran disappointingly on a firm surface at Royal Ascot and was not seen out until the autumn when she went to post for the Dubai Champion Stakes.

Shiva returned to her best on easier going to finish second of 13, beaten one and a quarter lengths behind Alborada.

With ground conditions to suit on the Rowley Mile Shiva looks a cut above the opposition in tomorrow's Group Three contest.

Cecil, who had a quiet year in 1999 in numerical terms by his own high standards with 65 winners, can make up for lost time by completing a treble on the card.

He can also strike with the promising Arabesque in the Geoffrey Barling Maiden Fillies' Stakes and the well-bred newcomer Angiolini in the Wood Ditton Stakes.

Best value bet of the day could be Marsad in the Charles Heidsieck Champagne Rated Stakes.

Jon Akehurst's sprinter has yet to show he stays tomorrow's trip of seven furlongs but his style of racing suggests the extra distance should be well within his grasp.

Marsad won over six furlongs at Doncaster last season and ran several good races in defeat at that trip, including when fourth in the Ladbroke Ayr Gold Cup after a sluggish start.

He has already shown his wellbeing this term with an encouraging effort at Kempton Park last month when, after once again missing the break, he finished fifth, beaten under three lengths behind stable-companion Passion For Life.

With that run under his belt Marsad will strip a lot fitter at Newmarket and is made the nap selection to open his account for the campaign.

Charlie Morlock's tough mare Native Charm can record her fourth success of the season in the Faucets For Mira Rada Showers Silver Trophy Chase at Cheltenham.

She has already won at Prestbury Park, Newbury and Ascot this term.

And she has performed with credit on her two most recent outings when second to Rockforce at Sandown and filling the same slot behind Dark Stranger in the Mildmay Of Flete at last month's Cheltenham Festival.

Native Charm, who goes on any ground and is a sound jumper, can make the most of her weight allowances to capture tomorrow's Grade Two prize.

At Beverley Jo Mell can take advantage of the current spell of wet weather to land the Leconfield Classified Stakes on his favoured soft going.
