SEQUOYAH STAKES CLASSIC CLAIM

Sequoyah advertised her claims for Classic honours next season when taking the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes at Curragh today.

Heavily supported from 4-1 into 9-4 favourite, the daughter of Sadler`s Wells went clear into the final furlong in the hands of Jamie Spencer to give champion trainer Aidan O`Brien his first victory in the IR£175,000 race.

'Sequoyah is a very special filly she has lots of speed and should be a top class filly next season when I think she will go for the English Guineas,' said O`Brien.

The stable`s first-choice jockey Michael Kinane was out through suspension, so 20 year-old Spencer came in for the plum spare ride on the impressive winner.

'I was always going well and my filly quickened the moment I asked her to stride on two furlongs out,' said Spencer, who has enjoyed a splendid strike-rate in Britain this year for Luca Cumani.

Sequoyah displaced Mick Channon`s Hotelgenie Dot Com as favourite, and got first run onthat opponent in the closing stages.

'We did not have the best of luck in running, but the winner has flown,' said Channon.

'My filly got held up just when the winner sprinted, but she has run to the line to get second.'

Visiting English jockeys George Duffield and Francis Norton were also among the winners at the meeting, with Duffield showing his strength to get John Dunlop`s Iftiraas home by a whisker in the Trusted Partner Matron Stakes.

Norton put up 1lb overweight on 9-1 favourite Silverware in the Irish Cambridgeshire, but he proved well worth the booking by Silverware`s owner, trainer and breeder Pat Hughes.

'I wanted someone strong in the finish and Francis did the job well,' said Hughes whose runner held the late surge of 16-1 chance Osprey Ridge by half a length.
