Tom Scudamore, son of former champion jump jockey Peter, showed some of his father's strength in a finish when landing a narrow victory on Tom Cobbler in the Folkestone Amateur Riders' Novices' Hurdle at the Kent track this afternoon.
The young rider gave Nigel Twiston-Davies's gelding a forceful ride to get him home by a head from the 8-13 favourite Cimarrone Cove after the pair had been locked together for the final three furlongs.
It was the seventh success of the season for Scudamore, who had a point-to-point winner for his mother, Marilyn, on Sunday at Cottenham.
There was a sting in the tail for Howard Ephgrave, rider of Cimarrone Cove, who was banned for six days, on dates to be notified later.
The stewards found that Ephgrave's mount had interfered with Tom Cobbler after entering the home straight and found him guilty of careless riding.
Forgotten Hero broke a leg on the first bend and had to be put down.
Mark Pitman, who trains Cimarrone Cove, received some recompense with Browjoshy in the Kent's Only Racetrack Novices' Handicap Chase.
The seven-year-old, having his first race for nine months, ran on strongly from the final fence to beat Forever Noble by two lengths.
Pitman was full of praise for his jockey Timmy Murphy, saying: "What a great ride he gave the horse - so positive. For the gelding's first run of the season it was a great performance."
There was another tragic incident when Whispering Court fell at the seventh fence, broke a leg and had to be destroyed.
Young Devereaux enjoyed an easy victory in the Come Racing At Folkestone Novices' Chase under Joe Tizzard. The Paul Nicholls-trained seven-year-old went past front-running Sharpical three fences from home to score by 21 lengths.
Tizzard thinks the gelding now needs further than this two miles and was full of praise for his mount's ability to put himself right at his fences when getting in close.
Jimmy Swift appeared to have the Cheriton Selling Handicap Hurdle sewn up when two lengths ahead approaching the final flight, but a mistake let in One In The Eye who scored by four lengths.
Winning trainer Jamie Poulton and rider Colin Bolger were having their second victory in two days, having won with Male-Ana-Mou at Plumpton on Monday.
Poulton said: "This one is home bred and is my wife Camilla's favourite. She will be highly delighted as we have just had a new baby son Alexander, as well."
Bolger was having his fourth winner since he joined the stable after time with James Fanshawe and more recently with Ted Walsh in Ireland.
There was no bid for the winner at the subsequent auction.
Selatan's chance in the three-and-a-quarter mile Arena Leisure plc Handicap Chase seemed to have gone when Mr Miller surged past three out, but the picture soon changed.
Selatan and Carl Llewellyn were back in front again at the next fence after Mr Miller weakened quickly.
Coole Hill was eventually second, beaten 10 lengths by Selatan.
Winning trainer David Gandolfo said: "It wasn't the best race in the world but we knew he stayed, and popping him away in the lead early got him jumping. He had a nasty fall at Warwick early in the season and we schooled him in blinkers at home the other day which must have helped."
The closing Weatherbys Turf News Handicap Hurdle was a thrilling way to end the afternoon.
Garolo had cruised into the lead on the home bend and showed no signs of stopping, but Miss Bertaine had been making relentless progress from the rear and got to Garolo on the run-in to win by half-a-length.
Victor Dartnall, said of his winner, ridden by Jim Culloty: "She stays very well and this has done us the world of good as we have had trouble with a bug lately."
