Sartorial fits the bill as a value ante-post bet for the Vodafone Stewards' Cup at 'Glorious Goodwood' on August 5.
The four-year-old's career has been beset by injury problems but it looked as though everything was coming right when he won a competitive Newmarket sprint on his last appearance in May.
And although placing an ante-post wager on such a competitive race is a treacherous business, there are plenty of reasons to suggest that Sartorial will go close.
The most obvious imponderable at this stage is the draw.
Over the years trends had developed showing a clear bias towards horses drawn high - only to swing the opposite direction last year.
Just as it had looked as if high numbers held a hefty advantage with three winners in four years drawn 28, 29 and 30 in the 30-runner contest, last year's race went the opposite direction with low numbers holding sway.
That result can be explained by the fact that the course executive had developed a policy of husbandry designed to mean that there was no advantage to horses drawn on either side of the track.
Evidently it worked.
Whether the same will be the case this year remains to be seen but once again the trainers of the 30 will be allowed to select a position at the 'draw for the draw'.
Introduced last year to coincide with the 48-hour declaration stage, most of those who lost out because of the draw had only themselves to blame after selecting a high stalls position when given the choice.
But essentially you never know how you're going to do with the draw until after the race so ante-post punters are best advised to just grit their teeth and get on with it rather than indulging in over-analysis.
Sartorial was an effortless winner on his seasonal reappearance at Sandown where connections afterwards expressed the hope that he could go on to deliver the promise he had been offering since his juvenile days.
And although only fourth in the mud next time, he really impressed on a more suitable surface at Newmarket, proving too strong for useful yardstick Cadeaux Cher and is able to race off the same handicap mark here.
It takes a classy performer to win this contest and few winners come from the foot of the weights so in that respect Sartorial is at the right end of the handicap.
Trainer Peter Makin knows how to lay out a handicapper for a valuable prize and will have his charge cherry-ripe for the big day.
Sartorial is worth support at 20-1.
Last year's winner Harmonic Way will be a popular choice to repeat the win for many punters, especially after his remarkable come-from-behind performance to land the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot.
However, Harmonic Way is not the most straightforward customer at the best of times and would have to break all records to hump 9st 11lb to success here.
It is not beyond the realms of possibility that he could do so - he is evidently in good heart and the frantic early pace plays right into his hands.
But it really would have to be a remarkable effort and he is reluctantly passed over.
Others to consider are improving three-year-olds Blue Mountain and San Salvador.
Both have shown themselves to be likeable and progressive performers but it is hard to overlook the poor record of their generation in this contest and reluctantly they too cannot be supported.
Instead look at Al Muallim.
The six-year-old was on the periphery of Pattern races when at his peak two years ago with Pip Payne but has since had a rough time of things.
However, he is now with David Nicholls, a master of sweetening up the out-of-form horses that arrive at his yard.
If Al Muallim were ever to return to something like his best form, he would be exceptionally well-weighted here and very hard to beat.
