The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Mulgrave Street ridden by David Casey and trained by Tony Mullins.
The gelding finished sixth in the second division of the Laurels Bar Maiden Hurdle.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
David Casey stated that he was instructed his mount relaxed and jumping early and to try to get him to finish well as he had shown very little in his previous two runs on testing ground. He stated that his mount ran in snatches throughout the race, made a few mistakes and gurgled in the final circuit of the race. He also stated that is was belief that this animal may need three miles in the futrure. Mr Mullins confirmed the instructions and informed the Stewards that this animal has had many problems in the past and had not shown much in his first two runs and felt that today may have been his last chance to show some promise. He was surprised by the performance and was very happy with David Casey's riding. He watched the race between the third and second last hurdles and did not see his charge in the closing stages.
However on reviewing the race on video he was of the opinion that his charge did not make up that much ground in the closing stages.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Mulgrave Street was post race normal.
Having viewed the video of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Mulgrave Street had not been allowed to run on his merits and that rule 212 (a) had been breached. The Stewards therefore suspended Mulgrave Street from running for 42 days, fined Tony Mullins €2000 and suspended David Casey for 14 days.
