Running and Riding Enquiry

Meeting: LISTOWEL, WEDNESDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER 2008

Race: THIRD

The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Plemont Bay (GB), ridden by J.G.M. Murphy, and trained by Mr. C. Byrnes.

Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.

J.G.M. Murphy, stated that he was instructed to jump off about three quarters way back in the field, give his mount a sweet ride and do his best without using the whip as he resents it.

He added that his mount hung a little in both straights and he got close to some of the hurdles as a result of the sticky ground. He further added that his mount heaved and gurgled at the third last flight at a time when he was about to take closer order but consequently left his mount alone from thereon.

Mr. Byrnes confirmed the instructions and added that his charge is ungenuine and this rider was chosen in the hope that he might kid the gelding along. He added that his previous two races both under the Rules of Racing showed reluctance when the whip was used. He felt that the rider, having ridden to instructions and even knowing that the horse would find nothing, he should still have pushed his mount along.

He reminded the Stewards that both blinkers and cheekpieces were omitted today but his only hope is to ride him off the pace and hope that he can pass horses to give him encouragement.

The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that that Plemont Bay (GB) was post race normal.

Having viewed the video of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted Mr Byrnes' explanation. They were of the opinion that J.G.M. Murphy was in breach of Rule 212 and suspended him for 21 racedays and ordered that he forfeit his riding fee.
