RIVER TIMES LOOKS HUNT CUP VALUE

Punters can look forward to top-class racing and countless betting opportunities at Royal Ascot next week.

There will be the usual number of supposed 'good things' like Dubai Millennium in Wednesday's Prince Of Wales's Stakes.

The 10-furlong contest is a Group One for the first time this year and with Montjeu likely to head instead for the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud the Godolphin star will be at short odds to follow up his victory in the Dubai World Cup in March.

Dubai Millennium has been given plenty of time to acclimatise since his return from the Middle East and can not be opposed on his first run in Britain this year.

But better value on the same afternoon can be found in the Royal Hunt Cup.

This handicap over the straight mile should attract a maximum field of 32 and with bookies currently going 8-1 the field there are some good horses at good prices.

Caribbean Monarch has been installed ante-post favourite following three good efforts so far this term and his unlucky-in-running second to Mayaro Bay at York last time gives Sir Michael Stoute's charge a live chance.

However, it could pay to look further down the handicap and the one that takes the eye is River Times who is set to receive 5lb from the market-leader.

Tim Easterby's firm-ground specialist finished a length and a quarter behind Caribbean Monarch last time after attempting to lead throughout.

That was River Times's first run since he disappointed on rain-softened ground in the Worthington Lincoln at Doncaster and he is bound to improve for the outing.

He started the campaign by being beaten a short head by The Prince in a valuable all-weather event at Wolverhampton, with subsequent Lincoln winner John Ferneley a head away in third.

River Times meets John Ferneley on terms 7lb better at Ascot and with the weather set fair Easterby's runner looks worth an interest at his current odds of around 25-1.

The meeting's other major betting event is Friday's Wokingham Handicap.

It could pay to go with the money in this six-furlong event and rely on Ladbrokes' 7-1 favourite Pepperdine.

David Nicholls' sprinter booked his ticket for Royal Ascot by finishing just over five lengths in fifth behind stable-companion Rudi's Pet in the Group Three Ballyogan Stakes at Leopardstown, although his trainer was disappointed with the run.

He said: 'He didn't really jump out of the stalls like he can and in a race like that it's hard to make up the ground.'

Pepperdine had previously finished a close third to Sartorial in a hot Newmarket handicap on his seasonal debut.

With 8st 13lb Pepperdine does not appear over burdened and this progressive gelding rates the bet of the week.

His stablemate Rudi's Pet - last season's most improved sprinter - can follow up his Irish success with victory in Tuesday's King's Stand Stakes.

After his Leopardstown win Nicholls remarked: 'I was delighted with him. He wasn't fully fit and there's more to come from him.'

But Rudi's Pet will not have matters all his own way in the five-furlong Group Two and his main danger could be Flanders.

Easterby's filly was beaten a whisker in this race 12 months ago and showed her wellbeing with a cosy success at Beverley.

As well as Dubai Millennium and Gold Cup hope Kayf Tara, Godolphin have major chances with Aljabr in the Queen Anne Stakes on the opening day, Lend A Hand in Thursday's Cork And Orrery Stakes and Mutafaweq in the Hardwicke Stakes on Friday.

The last-named horse ran a race full of promise over an inadequate 10 furlongs at the Curragh, finishing three lengths third behind Montjeu in the Tattersalls Gold Cup.

That showed he had recovered from his hard-fought triumph in the Rothmans Royals St Leger last September.

Mutafaweq may hold too many guns for Shiva, who requires soft going to show her best form, and northern challenger Fruits Of Love.

In the Cork And Orrery Lend A Hand can confirm last month's York form with Pipalong, having beaten the filly by one and a half lengths on the Knavesmire.

And Aljabr can lead throughout in the Queen Anne Stakes to supplement his win in the Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.
