RICHARDS KEEPS OPTIONS OPEN

Lydia Richards will wait to assess the opposition before deciding whether to let Eau De Cologne take his chance in Saturday's Whitbread Gold Cup.

The eight-year-old has only had three races over fences to date, winning twice, and was impressive when beating more experienced rivals in the Victor Chandler Handicap Chase at Newbury last month.

However, the gelding may sidestep the Sandown showpiece for the Pizza Hut Novices' Chase on the same card.

His trainer said today: 'He's also in the three-mile novice chase there on Saturday and we'll wait and see what's declared before we decide which race to run him in.

'He's taken very well to fences, he was always going to. He ran in handicap company when he won at Newbury last time and that was no problem to him so we have no worries there.

'If the ground came up soft we probably wouldn't run him but if it was better ground we'd like to run him in the Whitbread and I certainly think he'll stay.

'He's very well and I think he's a good horse.'

Regular rider Jimmy McCarthy will again take the mount on Saturday.
