RAIN SOFTENS EPSOM GROUND

Fears that the Vodafone Derby will be run in a mudbath were played down today.

Heavy recent rain has hit the Epsom area and the going is on the soft side ahead of the Classic a week on Saturday.

But clerk of the course Andrew Cooper stressed that there was no need to panic over ground conditions for the big race.

"Epsom has had more rain than Sandown or Kempton but it has taken it very well," he said.

"It is good to soft in the main, and softer than that in places, and the forecast is unsettled.

"But it only takes a couple of dry days to get back to real good ground."

A soft surface at Epsom would suit leading hopes such as Aristotle, Sinndar and Saddler's Quest but could count against favourite King's Best, who is seen by some as a doubtful stayer.
