Torrential rain wiped out the last three races of today`s eight-race programme at Leicester.
And with no improvement in conditions expected overnight clerk of the course Nick Lees has also abandoned tomorrow`s card.
The horses in the first four races appeared to cope well with the heavy conditions but the Richard Hannon-trained Insightful fractured his near hind leg on the road crossing in the Stoat Selling Stakes and had to be put down.
Insightful`s rider Jimmy Fortune complained to the stewards that the course was unfit for racing and, after an inspection, it was decided to abandon the two remaining races on the round course but run the concluding Apprentice Maiden Stakes on the straight course.
However, with the rain continuing to pour, a further inspection was called at 4.30 at which the last race and tomorrow`s card were abandoned.
Explaining the stewards actions, Lees said: 'The stewards went out with Jimmy Fortune, George Duffield, John Reid and Michael Hills.
'They looked at the crossing where the ground had got poached where the starting stalls had been pushed across.
'The ground there was slightly firmer than the natural state of the ground and therefore unsafe and it was decided to abandon the next two races on the round course.
'The stewards also looked carefully at the dip on the straight course and decided it was perfectly okay, but then the rain became heavier and the course became waterlogged.'
The race went to 33-1 shot Centaur Spirit, trained by Andy Streeter and ridden by Francis Norton, who beat Royal Exposure by five lengths.
There was no bid for the winner at the auction and Tote backers were rewarded with a dividend of almost 89-1.
The most exciting finish of the day came in the Shelduck Fillies` Handicap in which Eve forced a dead heat with Natalie Jay in the final stride.
It had looked as if the former had got up and that was certainly Michael Fenton`s reaction as he led Eve straight into the winners` circle.
Previous experience certainly helped Pearl Bright to open her account in the second division of the EBF Hare Maiden Fillies` Stakes.
John Dunlop`s charge was in front a long way from home and in the end needed all her strength under Philip Robinson`s driving to hold on from Halcyon Daze.
Dunlop`s head lad Gary Hatfield said: 'She seemed to handle the conditions really well but Philip said she was still a bit green in front and that she`ll come on for the race and stay further.'
Paul Hanagan and Cautious Joe proved a winning combination here last month when easy ground proved no handicap to them, and the same was true in the Badger Classified Stakes in which they had too many guns for Martello and Hard Lines.
Hanagan is attached to Richard Fahey`s stable, 10 of his 20 victories this season coming for the trainer.
Hanagan said: 'This filly acts in the ground and she saw out the trip well.'
