Radio Star tuned in for a debut victory at Sandown, but his rider David Harrison picked up a three-day ban in the process.
Henry Cecil's Dance West, the 2-7 favourite for the Michael Simmonds Memorial Stakes, led over three furlongs out and looked to have the race in the bag.
But the James Fanshawe-trained Radio Star found a fine turn of speed to pass the hot-pot close home and win by three-quarters of a length.
However, when Radio Star was being brought out to challenge, he bumped the eventual third Sarena Special, but the placings remained the same after the inquiry.
Yet Harrison was banned three days (June 25-27) for irresponsible riding of a minor nature.
Fanshawe said: 'We found Radio Star could be a little naughty in the stalls and he had a 'comealong' halter on to get him in today.
'He was a June 12 foal so did not run last year but he is a half-brother to Dynaformer, and the first Storm Cat colt I've had in the yard. His owner Joseph Allen has been dying to get him over to the States, but hopefully I might hang on to him for a bit longer now.'

Roberts said: 'Triccolo must have it fast. Last time at Pontefract he came there cruising but then his action went on the soft going.'

Trainer Richard Hannon did not think that Blue Gold and John Reid had got back up again on the line for a short head victory.
'That's the first time this season that a photograph has gone my way,' he said, 'and that is only the third handicap I've won this year.
'I was thinking about running him in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot next week, but I'm glad I went for this now.'
Knockemback Nellie bounced back from a Brighton second on Thursday night to take the SBJ Group Claiming Stakes, leading two furlongs out for Neil Pollard to beat King Of Peru by half a length.
Winning handler David Elsworth said: 'After he ran last night I totally confused her this morning when she thought she was going to have a day off. She is only an ordinary filly, but a fun horse for the group which owns her.
'I don't usually run them as quick as this but she's a star in her own class and I'm in the entertainment business. Look at her! She's ready to go again and she'll be out in no time.'
Speedy Gee lived up to his name and kept his cool in the opening EBF Maiden Stakes to score for Mick Channon by a length and a quarter from Rushby.
The 4-1 shot, ridden by Steve Drowne, had looked to have a touch of temperament in his first two runs of the season, but although showing a hint of greenness, still led over a furlong out to win readily.
Drowne said: 'He is still a big baby and kept stepping over the paths, but he's going the right way.'
Romantic Affair kept up John Dunlop's current purple patch by taking the Thames Ditton Handicap under Pat Eddery.
The gelding was stepping up in trip and relished the 11 furlongs, leading a furlong out to beat Three White Sox by three lengths.
