RACING CHARITY TO BENEFIT FROM ASCOT RACE

Ascot racecourse is to stage a charity race in aid of Racing Welfare on Wednesday April 5th, it was announced today.

The Racing Welfare Charities' Millennium Appeal Charity Sweepstake, the eighth race of Ascot's last national hunt meeting of the season, will be contested by 12 horses over 12 furlongs on the flat.

The riders include former trainer Charlie Brooks, Tarnya and Lucy Sherwood, the wives of trainers Oliver and Simon, the Jockey Club's publication relations officer John Maxse and Weatherbys chairman Johnny Weatherby.

Clerk of the course Nick Cheyne said: "In Ireland they run a lot of charity races like this and they're always very popular.

"It's up to each rider to find a suitable horse, which must be aged at least four years old, and I suspect there could be a few interesting runners."
