Dermot Weld's Quality Team finished a creditable seventh in the Italian Derby as Kallisto, one of three German runners, cleaned up in the Rome classic yesterday. The Irish runner hovered menacingly and tried hard to make a race of it with Kallisto, but was unable to sustain his effort.
Kallisto (34-10), coming off an easy group success in Frankfurt, finished clear of Paul Cole's Windsor Boy. Paolini was a short head further away in third. Ed Dunlop's Night Style was 14th while Godolphin's River's Curtain was one of five non-runners.
Earlier, Godolphin's Evil Empire finished fourth to Hamond (Willie Ryan) (18-10) as German raiders initiated a group double in the Premio Carlo d'Alessio.
John Hills's Ramooz (Billy Newnes) was a five lengths fifth to Kalatos (32-10) in the Group Three Laurent Perrier Meile at Baden Baden yesterday. The Sean Woods runner, Knockholt (Paul Eddery), was last in a group three stayers contest, the Betty Barclay Rennen (2m), won by Wins Fiction at the same venue on Saturday.
